Here is today’s update regarding the spread of COVID-19 in the United States.

  • US Confirmed Cases: 717,327 (+36,917)
  • US Recovered: 51,068
  • US Deaths: 37,368 (+2,003)
  • US Death Rate: 5.2%

Bad News: The number of new daily confirmed cases exceeded 30,000 for the eighth time – the highest increase of the past eight days. Good News: The overall US death rate remained stable at 5.2%. The seven-day moving average of the cumulative case doubling period lengthened to 14.1 days. The seven-day moving average of the doubling period for deaths in the United States lengthened to 8.3 days.

Based on today’s number of confirmed cases and the current doubling period, here are today’s projections if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:

  • May 2 – 1.4 million cases
  • May 16 – 2.9 million cases
  • May 30 – 5.7 million cases
  • June 13 – 11.5 million cases

Based on today’s cumulative number of confirmed deaths and the current doubling period, here are today’s projections if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:

  • April 26 – 75,000 deaths
  • May 4 – 149,000 deaths
  • May 12 – 299,000 deaths
  • May 21 – 598,000 deaths

  • Global Confirmed Cases: 2,284,018
  • Global Recovered: 290,579 (12.7%)
  • Global Deaths: 156,901
  • Global Death Rate: 6.9%

Bad News: The global death rate rose again to 6.9%. Good News: The seven-day moving average for the global confirmed case doubling period increased to 18.3 days. Based on today’s cases and the current doubling period, here are the projections for the world if nothing changes and the doubling period remains constant:

  • May 6 – 4.6 million cases
  • May 24 – 9.1 million cases
  • June 11 – 18.3 million cases
  • June 30 – 36.5 million cases

These daily updates include data and projections for the state of Georgia because that is where a large number of my family and friends live.

  • Georgia Confirmed Cases: 17,669 (+475)
  • Georgia Cases Currently Hospitalized: 3,420 (19.4%)
  • Georgia Deaths: 673 (+23)
  • Georgia Death Rate: 3.8%

Bad News: The seven-day moving average of the doubling period for deaths in Georgia shortened to 17.5 days. Good News: The seven-day average for the new confirmed cases doubling period lengthened slightly to 15.8 days.
